Abstracta Botanica - Its 19 years in brief.

Abstracta Botanica publishes papers in the field of plant ecology and taxonomy, with special emphasis on theoretical and analytical aspects. The journal was launched in 1971 by Prof. T. Simon, former head of the Department of Plant Taxonomy and Ecology, Eotvos University, Budapest, with the intention of publishing abstracts of theses prepared by graduate students under the supervision of departmental staff. A few years after its establishment, Abstracta Botanica started to publish research papers and reports written by a wider scientific community, including foreigners. In 1984, Prof. Pal Juhasz-Nagy became the editor-in-chief, whereas Janos Podani was appointed as the associate editor; they decided to give a new shape to the journal and extended its scope as well, starting with vol. 8. Since then there has been a growing interest expressed by researchers in Hungary and elsewhere to contribute. Two issues appear per year, and especially valuable are the numerous special issues and volumes, containing proceedings of international symposia held in Hungary. The highest overall quality was reached by the very thick volume 17, which was devoted to the memory of the late P. Juhasz-Nagy (45 contributors from 10 countries).

ABSTRACTA BOTANICA was discontinued with the last issue in 1998 and then fused with Coenoses to restart as COMMUNITY ECOLOGY.
